Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple. Participants create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and the bowl, guests give a suggested minimum donation. The meal's sponsors and/or guests choose a hunger-fighting organization to receive the money collected.
Empty Bowls was started by a teacher in Michigan in the spring of 1991. Due to the tremendous success of the project and the work of literally thousands of participants, Empty Bowls projects now occur throughout the year, raising millions of dollars to fight hunger. In collaboration with the Mercyhurst Social Work Club, the Mercyhurst Art Education Club has been donating our collected funds to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania.
Together, the Art Ed. and Social Work Clubs have won the Second Harvest Food Bank's Bread Basket Award for the outstanding funds raised through our Empty Bowls Fundraisers. The award was won in 2007 as well as in 2008. Due to a number of reasons the event was not held this year but the production of bowls and promotion of our 2010 fundraiser and event are underway. Tickets for the event will go on sale in the early spring with the event to be held on March 28, 2010.
